A Basketball Story Even Non-Sports Fans Will Enjoy
Nuns and B-Ball
Attention, non-sports fans. I’ve got a sports story even you will like!
It starts with Handsome Hubby, of course.
My poor man! He was oh, so sad because I would not shell out $174,000 for (an almost courtside) ticket to watch the Knicks and the Spurs duke it out in the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden.
But then, Wednesday night, he watched the first game of the Finals in San Antonio and spied a group of super die-hard fans — the “Spurs nuns” cheering on the hometown team. Now, Handsome Hubby has questions, many questions.
Non-B-Ball B-Ball Questions
First, a bit about the nuns. They are the Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco in San Antonio. The sisters work in education and youth ministry. They are popularly known as the “Spurs nuns,” but they are actually sisters because of their public works. They’ve recently gained a nationwide following because of their enthusiastic cheering and pre-game blessings of the team.
Turning to Handsome Hubby’s questions, they reflect his perspectives both as a fan and as an attorney.
- Do the nuns pay for the tickets out of pocket, out of collection basket funds, or are they comped?
- If they are comped, by whom? The players? The team owners? Or a higher, heavenly power?
- Regardless of who pays — the Spurs or a deity — is that appropriate? Should nuns accept freebies? Is it fair?
These ethical questions are critical and demand the attention of the governing body of the National Basketball Association. Think about it. The “Spurs nuns” are obviously praying for their hometown team to win. Doesn’t that create a huge “heavenly” boost, one that other teams lack, especially the Knicks and us godless New Yorkers?
Also, in terms of Christian charity, shouldn’t the sisters who, presumably, have taken a vow of charity likewise renounce the pricy ticket perk and give unto the poor, which right now is virtually every New Yorker (except Spike Lee, Ben Stiller and Timothée Chalamet) who cannot in their wildest dreams afford those insanely overpriced tickets to see the Knicks play in their first NBA finals in over half a century? (I’m just asking on behalf of a friend — or a sulking husband.)
Ya’ Gotta Love the Spurs Nuns
Silliness aside, even if you’re not a sports fan, please check out the Spurs nuns. Watching them cheer on the San Antonio team will cheer your heart! They are adorable! Even Knicks fan Handsome Hubby agrees. However, he does have one final question: will the sisters accept a nice Catholic boy into their order before the Finals conclude? He’d really like to join them for a prayerful moment in that great earthly garden — Madison Square Garden.
